Abstract
A new three-dimensional finite element model is developed for analysis of soil nailing. Various finite element methods for soil nailing analysis are examined. It is found that most methods are difficult to use and inaccurate results may be produced. In the new finite element method, no nail element emerges when sideslope is calculated. The tension of nail is regarded as internal force. The internal force is applied to the soil element. The nail force and the displacement of sideslope are obtained through iteration An example is provided to verify the proposed method. Comparison is made between the finite element results and the experimental data. Very good agreement is reached, showing that the present method is effective and convenient.
